You Have to Start Where You Are (and start now)

I started writing Blank Canvas when I was in prison.

I used those black and white composition notebooks from high school and a cheap Bic pen.

I used an iPhone when I was released to the halfway house because it was all I had.

When I went home, I used an iPad from 2012 because it was all I had.

I saved up and eventually bought a laptop, a total gamechanger, except for one thing:

I started chasing the “perfect” writing s/w to the detriment of actually writing.

When I find this magical software, then I can write.

What happened to a pen and paper being good enough?

I was fooling myself into thinking searching for writing software was making progress.

✅ What I learned:

Chasing the perfect sw/tool/hack/trick before taking action is the antithesis of action.

There’s no substitute for action.

I have to use what I have, not what I wish I had.

I have to start where I am, not where I wish I was.

I gave up the search and got back to work.

The bonus: The win is in the work.

That’s where I find a deep sense of mission, meaning, and fulfillment.

It’s where I fill myself from within.

I invite you to look at your own life.

  • Are you waiting for the perfect time to start?
  • Are you waiting for the perfect system before you can begin?
  • How would it feel to stop waiting and start creating?

Because what I’ve found is this: the life you desire isn’t inside some fancy system or process.

It’s here:

“The shortest answer is doing the thing.”

Ernest Hemingway
